Today, I Called in Sick to Work

Today, I called in sick to work.

I don’t have a doctor’s note (although I could probably call my therapist to get one). I didn’t really give a concrete reason, just, “I’m not feeling too hot.” When my boss says, “It’s quiet here, don’t worry,” it should make me feel better.

Instead, I feel guilt. I feel shame. I feel weak. I feel useless.

My _________ Is Showing: Anxiety in the Workplace

Being a graduate student in higher education while also working part time in higher education is often a blessing and a curse. I enjoy my program, and I appreciate the things that I have learned. One of the major criticisms I have about my program is the lack of discussion around mental health and how it affects professionals. Lifelong Learning

I’ve struggled with mental health my whole life, as far back as middle school where a teacher actually recommended I see a doctor for depression. I saw a medical doctor who ran a blood test and said I didn’t have it. I had no idea what depression was. I can’t remember going to more than three or four therapy sessions at a time and haven’t ever been able to find a therapist who is upfront with me or that I trust. Continue reading
