Yesterday, I woke up with hope in my step–today, despair. Typically, for someone with a history of bipolar disease, this shouldn’t sound completely off. But after yesterday’s election, I am not only low but heart broken.
I am not heart broken because someone won and someone lost – I am heart broken because of the number of people who are constantly isolated, victimized and looked down upon just because of the color of their skin or who they love. We now live in a country where our president-elect promotes this kind of hatred. That is why I am heart broken today.
As my students come in one at a time today to meet with me, I want to be able to give them words of hope. But I am struggling to find those today.
Instead, I am going to ask them and you to take a deep breath, and breathe. Do something for yourself today and this week. Watch an extra comedy show on Netflix. Take a bubble bath. Go for a walk. Whatever makes you put a smile on your face.
You do you in this time of healing and then when the time comes for us to be strong, we will be ready.
Hugs,
Carly
